Summertime means a glut of gigantic Hollywood blockbusters filling screen after screen at your local multiplex cinema. Time to empty your pockets for a movie you may or may not like as you stand in lines in the blistering heat, make your way across the sticky cinema floor, and try to drown out the screaming babies and obnoxious cellphones. Fun, huh?

Well, here’s an idea. How about spending your summer movie season at home with your family and friends, watching gorgeous widescreen presentations in your own backyard theater?

Running your own screening lets you control your evening. You choose the audience. You choose the food and drink selection. You choose the schedule. You choose the film. Yes, we know you won’t have access to the very latest thing playing on screens across the nation, but does that really matter all that much? If you haven’t seen it, it’s still new to you, right? And you get the opportunity to program all your old favorites as well. If it’s worth seeing, it’s worth seeing again.

The economic downturn of recent years drove this issue home – literally – for many of us. The word “stay-cation” entered the popular vocabulary as we all began looking for ways to have fun without breaking the bank. For many Americans, the sheer expense of gassing up the car, shelling out for movie tickets and then springing for the inevitable overpriced snacks made moviegoing more of a luxury than a casual entertainment, especially for large families. Suddenly it made perfect sense to make that one-time investment in a home theater system that brought the movie house to you.

Once people try our SilverScreen Backyard Theater, they fall in love with it. And so will you. So make your home this summer’s hot ticket!

Does your town have an old-style drive-in theater? Not many of them still exist, but many people of a certain age remember them fondly. The drive-in offered a special kind of communal entertainment experience. The sea of parked cars, the door-mounted trays of food and drink, the tinny little car speakers — it was a unique and memorable part of American popular culture. Wouldn’t it be great if you could recreate that environment for your next outdoor event? Well, with our SilverScreen Showcase outdoor theater, you can!

What goes into hosting a “Drive-In Night” for your church social, school presentation or organizational event? Well, first you have to secure the presentation rights to the film you plan on screening, usually through a major distributor such as Swank Motion Pictures. You also have to set up the presentation area properly. The parking lot for a building makes an ideal spot for a drive-in showing, partly because you have nice marked-off spaces for vehicles and partly because you can use the building’s electricity. You won’t need to deal with little speakers for each car, because the Showcase’s twin 10″ speakers deliver plenty of volume (you can order two additional speakers for the rear of the parking lot if you’re expecting an enormous crowd.)

You may also want to make sure the screen is tethered down against an unexpected surge of wind. We recommend running the included cam buckle web straps through the holes in some cinder blocks, for example, just to play it safe.

Dress up your “Drive-In Night” as much as you like. Sell concessions from car to car, show some fun old vintage trailers or ads before the main feature, or even go for the classic double feature presentation. It’s a new spin on an old favorite pastime!

If you did some shopping around for a backyard theater system before you finally struck gold by finding us, you probably saw a good many companies promoting inflatable screens. And you may have read tons of sales copy about how sensible, convenient and easy to use these screens are. So why doesn’t Backyard Theater Systems sell them?

Well, unfortunately you can’t believe everything you read. Inflatable screens have indeed seen widespread use in outdoor theater systems for years now, but easy and convenient they aren’t. If a sales rep tries to tell you that these things are as easy to blow up and tie down as a pup tent, do NOT believe them!

For one thing, you have to run a generator-powered pump to inflate them, and even then you’d better not be in a big hurry to start the show. To add insult to injury, you have to keep the generator running to keep the screen inflated during the movie! Can you say “distracting?” And when it’s all over, don’t count on relaxing anytime soon — you still have press all the air out of the screen and fold it all up for storage. Oh, and the slightest puncture or tear in the balloon, and you’ll have to buy a whole new screen. Still sounds like a great buy?

That’s why we’d much rather go with our QuikScreen system instead. Forget about inflating or deflating anything — the QuikScreen really lives up to its name. Just put the preassembled aluminum frame in place, stick the screen onto the Velcro around the frame’s perimeter, and secure everything as needed with the provided tie-down rings and straps. No noise, no muss, no fuss. Don’t let an inflatable screen deflate your good time — go with a QuikScreen instead!
